What objects tell the story of your life?

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by Legos. They have been one of my many interests since I was very young, and they have shaped the way I see many aspects of life. In my earliest memory of playing with Legos, I remember building my first Duplo Lego set. It was only a small set of miscellaneous pieces, but with my imagination, they could become anything. This was my first life lesson that, at the time, I had no idea about. Legos by themselves are just a pile of bricks, and to some, it may seem like not much can be done with only a small pile, but that’s where I saw the difference. I learned, at a very young age, that when these individual pieces work together, they can make anything you want. I think that translates incredibly well to real life. Legos are how I learned about teamwork. I was able to see that when you have an idea, you can take the individual pieces and put them together to bring your idea to life.

It wasn’t only the legos that worked well together, I also built an incredible and lifelong bond with my younger brother. With a two-year age difference between us, it was sometimes hard to find common ground, but when we played with legos, you wouldn’t be able to tell he was born two years after me. We came together to create everything our minds desired, free to build anything we wanted. My brother used to love taking apart my already-constructed sets and recycling the parts for other, sometimes more creative, things. Our proudest moment was building our Lego city, which featured a mix of pre-built sets and things we made ourselves.

Looking back on it, those were some of the happiest times in my life. My parents homeschooled my brother and I for about three years, and at that time, we didn’t have many friends, so we turned to Lego, and it brought us closer than ever before.

Now my brother and I have grown up. I’m applying to colleges, and he’s starting his second year of high school. We sometimes have disagreements and differences in opinion, but one wonderful thing we will always have and something we can reminisce about is the time we spent playing with Legos.

  1. This essay is super fun! I find it to be very relatable, having played with Lego and Duplo as a kid as well. I like how the essay immediately brings us into the subject of Legos. The pace and tone are good and help the essay have good flow. The conclusion is great, but I’d suggest expanding on it a bit. You could have a larger section on how reminiscing on Legos brings you and your brother together even through disagreements. That section could help add a bit more reflection into the essay. Still, I had a great time reading this.

  2. This post is really good! The tone is very conversational and comfortable. The story is relatable and I felt happy reading about your excitement. If you wanted to expand on the ideas, you could include more specifics about how you felt in the moment of playing with the Legos. You could also mention whether you've ever played with them recently or how/when/why you guys stopped. This is a really sweet story about your family, and it incorporates good messages of life lessons that many people can relate to learning. The conclusion does a nice job tying the story together, as well.

  3. Interesting story! I think you could make the first paragraph (especially the part after "It was only a small set of miscellaneous pieces, but with my imagination, they could become anything") more concise; many of these sentences have a very similar message and could be combined into fewer sentences. You could also connect the end of the first paragraph more tightly with the rest of the essay. For example, you could bring out the connection between "Legos are how I learned about teamwork" and how you bonded with your brother through Legos.

  4. This is essay was so fun and relatable. I loved Legos as well, it helped me build my friendship with some of my best friends, and I remember it was the first thing I bought in America when I moved from China. I think some specific stories relating to Legos would be nice, you can also go into detail about your first ever Duplo set, like what it was and if you struggled building it then overcame it.
